Elephant Parade

In a visit to my favorite city, I got hold of a most peculiar London map.  Rather than bus numbers cited on this guide, there presented a herd of numbered elephants.

An open-air exhibition of 260 beautifully painted elephants paraded around London for two summer months and I arrived there with barely a week left.  And so the elephant hunt had to commence without delay!

They were mostly found in Central London.  Trafalgar Square.  Green Park. Covent Garden.  Alas, many had slowly disappeared!  Some were no longer in the spots where they were supposed to be…as if they’re truly endangered and facing extinction.

It was such a relief to find the herd all convened in the grounds of Royal Chelsea Hospital, where they were auctioned and had the final public viewing.

Millions of people heard the call to save the Asian elephants and millions of pounds were raised to change their fate.  Artists, designers and celebrities certainly made these life-size beasts come to life!
